GAP RESEARCH MEETING
Monday 8th - Tuesday 9th June 2009
Lecture Theatre 1.04
Building G (Art & Design),
Monash University, Caulfield Campus [Map,

PROGRAM DETAILS & ABSTRACTS
This two day research meeting will concentrate on building a community
of
scientists and identifying key elements of the dynamics of the
Australia
plate margins, and the resulting geological processes, features and
hazards.
Invited speakers include Simon Turner (Macquarie University), Rick
Sibson (Univ. of Otago), Tony Crawford (CODES) , Alexey Goncharov (GA),
Geoff Clarke (USyd), Myra Keep (UWA), David Cooke (CODES), Dietmar
Müller (USyd) , Mike Sandiford (UMelb) , John Foden (University of
Adelaide), Klaus Regenauer-Lieb (UWA/ CSIRO) and Tim Stern (Victoria
University Wellington).

SUBMISSION OF RESEARCH POSTERS
IS ENCOURAGED
Key Research Themes include:
- Ancient and modern ore deposit systems, from the cratons to
the margins of the Australian plate;
- The deformation and breakup of plates: the Australian plate
and its ancient intraplate orogenies;
- Polarity flips in subduction zones, slab tears and windows
and the initiation of subduction;
- The Naked Plate Boundary of New Zealand: an evolving margin;
- The Alpine Fault drilling project;
- Climate and active tectonics: contrasting views from the
tropical to temperate extremes;
- Complexity of a “real plate system” from idealized
geodynamic models;
Conference Organisers
Roberto Weinberg (Monash), Louis Moresi (Monash), Tim Stern
(VUW) and
Myra Keep (UWA)

GAP PLANNING MEETING

REGISTRATION
for GAP Planning Meeting
(Attendance is strictly limited)
This one day planning meeting will concentrate on
establishing key research themes, and to develop collaborative research
proposals.
A major ten-year-plus initiative is envisaged, which would involve
co-ordinated grant applications from researchers around Australia and
New Zealand in their respective programs and, to fund researchers/
government scientists from PNG, Timor, etc. It would also be necessary
to coordinate national and international funding, and research and
industry resources. The rationale for the GAP Initiative includes:
- Bringing together scientific communities on and around the
Australian plate;
- Developing a critical mass of geodynamics knowledge /
applications in diverse and complicated settings;
- Supporting the scientific community in developing countries
where geology / geodynamics is of immediate relevance and information
is hard to come by;
- Developing a long term programme of regional geodynamics /
geophysical focused research.
